HTC One Max’s fingerprint scanner could feature app shortcuts based on finger

Yesterday we got another good look at the rumored HTC One Max after a snap shot of the massive device landed on Instagram. We get it, the phone is essentially a larger HTC One of Note-like proportions and we’ve known this for awhile now. Other than it’s huge size, the other standout feature in the One Max is one HTC was trying to keep under wraps, it’s fingerprint scanner. We’ve seen countless leaks of this alleged fingerprint scanner and though we knew how it’d work. Simply use your finger print to secure and unlock the device with little fuss. Turns out HTC might still have a few more secrets up their sleeves.

Some purported instructional images of the HTC One Max’s fingerprint scanner have leaked online, and show some neat bonus features users will be able to take advantage of once they get their fingers on the device. Apparently the fingerprint scanner will allow users to launch specific apps according to the finger used to unlock the device. For instance you can have your index finger simply unlock the phone, while the middle finger opens up the camera app (or dials 1-800-Apple). In all seriousness, app shortcuts based on fingers sounds like a nice way to add some additional functionality to what could otherwise be considered an Apple-copycat feature.

The fingerprint scanner could also act as a trackpad, ala Blackberry devices or the short lived optical trackpad found on the T-Mobile G2. Swiping up/down/left/right could move a cursor although the images “move focus” wording has us second guessing. In any case, the One Max and it’s fingerprint scanner should make an interesting addition to HTC’s lineup. Some Android enthusiasts have voiced their displeasure with the device “only” carrying a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, and 2GB of RAM, factors the average consumer doesn’t take into consideration when shopping for their next phablet.

Clash of Clans: Now on Android (in Canada and Finland)

It seems like only a few weeks since we were musing on the inevitability of Clash of Clans making the jump to Android, and now the inevitable has come to pass. Android gamers, get ready for the genuine article: Supercell’s Clash of Clans is now available to download from Google Play.

If you’ve just clicked that link and decided to call me a liar, I won’t blame you. While the game is officially on Android now, it’s only available in Canada and Finland. Don’t panic though – this is the same sort of soft launch we see all the time in mobile games. “The global release of Clash of Clans on Android will come as soon as we are confident that the Android version is of the highest quality,” said a moderator on the Supercell forums. “We hope that will be very soon!”

Amazon details Mayday, 24/7 live video tech support for Kindle Fire HDX line

Along with all of the excellent news from Amazon this evening regarding their new Kindle Fire HDX lineup is something called Mayday. You might be wondering what exactly that is, and we’ll tell you. Mayday! Mayday! We have a problem! Amazon will be offering 365/24/7 (all day every day) live video remote tech support on their new Kindle Fire HDX tablets. This is free for the new tablet owners, and is rather interesting.

Essentially what Amazon is doing is using their wide array of resources and backing to offer something no other tablet manufacturer does, or can. That being live 24/7 video tech support. A quick swipe down from the new quick settings panel you’ll find a Mayday button. This will be something you tap when you’re in need of customer support from Amazon. Whether it’s about the tablet, or anything else.

Limited Edition Galaxy Note 3 featuring flexible display could be announced next month

The war to make the first phone with a flexible display wages on— LG was expected to end it all today with the Vu 3, but the flexible display rumors did not hold any truth as the announcement came and went without a mention of the new screen technology.

More details emerge about ASUS FonePad HD 7, MeMO Pad HD 8 and MeMO Pad HD 10

Last week we reported on a roadmap of ASUS smartphone and tablet devices apparently scheduled for release sometime in 2013. New details have emerged about some of the devices. The ASUS FonePad will be renamed the FonePad HD 7 when refreshed later this year and will come with an Intel Atom Z2560 processor matched with either 8GB or 32GB of memory, 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution screen, and a slightly upgraded camera that can snap pics at 5MP versus the current 3MP resolution. The new FonePad HD 7 is expected to ship with Android 4.2.

Upcoming Amazon Kindle Fire HD will likely ship with Snapdragon 800

An Amazon mystery device (codename: Apollo) running Android 4.2.2 has shown up on GFX Bench with some pretty high-end specs, leading some to believe that this could be the next Kindle Fire HD. With a 2560 x 1600 pixel display, Adreno 330 GPU, and a 2.15GHz maximum CPU clock speed, one would most likely be right to assume that this new tablet will ship with a Snapdragon 800 processor. The device is also rumored to have an 8MP main camera, a front shooter, 2GB RAM, optional cellular connectivity, and 16/32/64 GB internal storage.

Nexus 7 (2013) factory images and binaries released

Much noise was made about Google delaying the release of factory images for the new Nexus 7. The issue was so big that Android Open Source Project maintainer Jean-Baptiste Queru decided to quit his post as the head of the AOSP team. Qualcomm seems to be the reason for such delays, with the company apparently blocking the release of the factory images due to proprietary binaries of theirs for the Snapdragon chipset sitting inside.

Fortunately, that entire episode was much more short-lived than we imagined it would be. The 2013 Nexus 7′s factory images have finally been posted to the internet, binaries and all. The typical user won’t care or need these, though it’s important news for those who like custom ROMs. This will allow developers to get down and dirty with the device to create the awesome works of art known as CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android and the like.

We’re not sure what this means for JBQ’s initial reaction, but folks should take solace in knowing that the community outcry from the events that transpired likely had something to do with getting the ball rolling on having these drivers and images available. If you’re a developer and need these, grab them now from Google’s developers’ site. If you’re a user, keep your eye on the destination from your favorite ROMs for new goods in the days and weeks to come.

“Non-final” HTC One Max press render hits the web

HTC has been teasing a bigger version of the HTC One — known around the tech world as the HTC T6 or HTC One Max — for a bit of time now. With “big things ahead” and a new Robert Downey Jr-injected ad campaign, we wholly expect the company to bring the device to us next month at IFA Berlin. Before that, though, it appears we may have gotten our first semi-official look at the thing in a press render.

A “non-final” render of the One Max has been leaked by the @evleaks Twitter account, giving us a peak at what the phone might look like once it finally arrives. There are no surprises here, really — it looks like freakin’ huge HTC One.

That said, the specs rumored to be sitting inside that aluminum ball of wonder has us really happy. In case you’re not in the know, we’re expecting:

  • 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • HTC UltraPixel camera
  • 32GB or 64GB of internal storage
  • 3,200mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 or 4.3 with HTC Sense 5
  • and more

It definitely would be quite the looker, though if HTC doesn’t find a way to shave that bezel down some, folks will find it hard to stuff into their jeans (particularly of the “skinny” variety).

Thor: Lord of Storms APK Download

When it comes to Norse Gods, you simply cannot beat Thor. He's a no-nonsense kind of deity with a fondness for hammers and an impressive talent for harnessing the power of electrical storms.

He'd certainly be high up on our list of fictional superbeings we'd like to invite around to our house for a spot of DIY and electrical work, put it that way.

He's also the star of a new title that combines RPG action with tower defence and even adds a twist of Plants vs Zombies. Thor: Lord of Storms places you on the role of the Thunder God himself, and tasks you with marshalling the forces of good against those of evil.

Striking out from your base on the left-hand side of the battlefield, you must repel hostile troops that flood in from the right. You can get up close and personal by guiding Thor towards his foes, but unless you call on assistance you'll find that even our muscle-bound hero can be overwhelmed if the odds are not in his favour.

Download Carmageddon for Android

Carmageddon was hugely popular back in the 1990s, though perhaps due to its controversial nature more than anything else. The automobile combat game spawned many copycats, but Carmageddon still holds a special place in our hearts.

Fans of the game who happen to own an iPhone have been able to play Carmageddon for iOS on the move since late last year, but those packing Android devices have been out of luck. That’s why a Kickstarter project was set up to get Carmageddon onto Google’s platform, and today that bore fruit – a full day earlier than expected.

Whilst the game is indeed available right now, it’s not quite as simple as that. See, the game is currently free, and it will remain so for the first 24 hours of its release. After that, the price goes up to a couple of dollars. But wait, the Play Store doesn’t allow free games to suddenly become paid-for titles, so what gives?

Well, the free, PROMO release will essentially go AWOL once that 24 hours period is up. That means no updates, no bug fixes, no nothing. At that point, a free DEMO version will be released alongside the full, paid-for version. It’s not ideal, but here’s how the developers explain it:

After the first 24 hours of its release, the PROMO version of the game will be removed from Google Play and will no longer be available. Subsequently, thePROMO version will be unsupported because we have no way to update the title once it’s taken down.

At the end of the day, you’re talking a couple of dollars based on that £1.49 price, which is certainly not going to break the bank.

As far as the actual gameplay is concerned, you’ll face 28 different opponents across a range of 11 environments. Racers can participate in a 36 level career mode, and use the instant replay feature to relive their best takedowns. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

The original PC and Mac version of Carmageddon was banned in various countries worldwide fifteen years ago. We’re assuming this new Android version will fare somewhat better.

Real Racing 3 for Android APK Download

After an iOS update a couple weeks back, Real Racing 3 for Android received its first big content pack update on Android yesterday, adding two new vehicles, over 100 new events, a new event type ('Hunter' mode), and cross-platform cloud saving.

This update is causing major issues for some people (myself included), and on multiple devices. If this happens to you, uninstall the game and then re-install. As long as your profile in the game is signed into Facebook, your progress should still be saved. If you never did the Facebook sign-in, you're out of luck for the time being, unless you don't mind having your profile erased.

The new vehicles are both Chevrolets - the Cobalt SS and the Camaro ZL1. I'm not exactly sure what Hunter mode is, but it likely comprises a chunk of the 100 new events FireMonkey is promising in the update, not that Real Racing 3 was lacking in that department to start with.

What's really cool about this update, though, is the cross-platform cloud save feature. If you're signed in with Facebook (ugh, I know), your Real Racing 3 progress will sync across all your devices, no matter which platform you're using. That's pretty awesome, actually. So if you have an iPad and an Android phone or tablet, your progress will save across both.

The update also includes an improved tutorial, an update main menu UI, and a stats leaderboard. Head to the Play Store to get the update, which will finish installing the next time you launch the game.
